The classification essay that does the best job of classifying its choice of topic also shares a bit of similarity with a comparison contrast essay. You can subtly show the similarities and differences, as well as positive and negative features, that make up what you are classifying. Not only does this incorporate the idea of comparison/contrast into your paper, but it adds to the details and promotes further elaboration of your thesis that you may not have gotten so in-depth about otherwise.

Getting back to the classification essay topics mentioned above, take these classification essay ideas for all they are worth. Think of questions that stem from each topic and consider how you would classify each of these individual entities. For example:

Parents: What type of parents do you have? What type of parents do you wish you had? How do your friends' parents differ from your parents? There are parents who love you and would do anything for you. There are parents who do not care, and let their children run free and do whatever they would like. Then, there are parents who fall between those two extremes. Classify parents. A comparison/contrast paper about this topic may define the differences between parent dynamics in the 50s versus parent dynamics nowadays. Expand on this in your classification essay writing and explain how all of these different types of parents that exist make for the wide variety that we hear about today versus what we heard about in terms of parents in the past.

Summer Jobs: What types of summer jobs have you had? What types of summer jobs do you wish you would have had instead? From being a lifeguard at a pool to working at the local bookstore, you can classify job opportunities and explain the differences between each one and how they are better than, worse than, or equal to one another.

Snobbishness: What makes people snobby? What types of people are snobby? Teachers can be snobby about the way they grade your papers. Parents can be snobby about how they talk about their children to their friends. Children can be snobby when they choose whom to play with or not play with on the playground at recess. There are so many forms of snobbishness and you can classify each of these in an analytical way within a classification essay.

World Travel: Where do you love to travel the most? Where do you wish you could travel? How do you plan to get there? You might travel by boat, train, car, or plane. You can classify modes of transportation, and discuss the positive and negative features of each. Or, you can discuss various locales around the world and why they are exciting to go to in your travels. You might even discuss a specific order of how to travel the world properly and see all the sights that exist in various countries.

Holiday Season: What holiday do you celebrate during the winter season? If you do not celebrate, do you still wish people a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy New Year, etc.? You may choose the classification essay topic of how people of various religions have different methods of wishing people the best during the holiday season. You may also choose to classify the holidays themselves, and discuss what the interesting aspects of each holiday are.

Ice Cream: What is your favorite flavor? What makes each flavor unique and tasty? What makes certain flavors bad, in your estimation? Classification essay topics on ice cream can range from the thirty-one flavors at Baskin Robbins to the various ice cream parlors such as Cold Stone Creamery, Ben & Jerry's, etc. and what makes each one's ice cream flavors unique and tasty in their own right.

Notice how in each example above, the power of persuasion was always present. No matter what classification essay topic you choose, you are persuading people in one way or another. With parents, you might talk about five different styles of parenting, but focus on one throughout that is the more respected, viable option for good parenting. For summer jobs, you might convey a soft spot for working at a summer camp, as it will be evident through your writing style that you probably worked at one yourself.

Remember that you can be persuasive without using first person pronouns. Instead of saying, "My parents were always there for me when I was growing up," say "Parents who are there for you when you are growing up are hard to come by, so cherish your parents if they are there for you." Notice how in the first version of the sentence there were three first person pronouns (my, me, and I), and in the second version, the power of persuasion made it evident that I believe parents being there for you is a very important aspect of parenting, as I said that you should cherish your parents if this is the case. Persuasion without first person can be done. You may have to work on how to do it properly, but once you figure it out, you will always understand how to best do classification essay writing or other styles of writing in that way.

One final method of thinking of classification essay ideas is to think of what you know. If you have friends, classify the different types. On the show Friends, there are six different personalities that exist. In the first few episodes, we learn that Monica is the neat freak, Chandler is the jokester, Joey is the kind and sweet womanizer, Phoebe is the quirky one, Rachel is the material one, and Ross is the one who always seems to have troubles, yet people come to him with their troubles. You can classify them in other ways than that, but they all are unique in their own way, and can be classified as such. Can you friends be classified like that? Also, you can classify TV shows you watch, foods that you eat, places you drive, etc. Never forget that in the ordinary you can find the extraordinary. When you find that, you must write about it, because that is where great writing stems from, and where classification essay topics can be found.
