Get started by simply asking yourself some questions.

How fond are you of essay writing?

The Writer 2011 Essay/Memoir Contest may be just what you are looking for in an essay writing scholarship contest. You must write an essay or memoir that catches the judges’ eyes, touches their hearts, tickles their funny bones, or gets at them in some other creative way. Only original, unpublished works of 1,000 to 2,000 words will be accepted. There are three prizes (one for first place, one for second place, and one for third place), and there is a $10 entry fee. The entry deadline is November 30, 2011. Find more information by visiting the contest page.

If you feel that your style is most complemented by your essay writing, another option may be to search websites like Fastweb for essay questions and other scholarship opportunities that will pique your interest.

Check out our page on how to write a thesis to make sure you know how to adapt your thesis to the various styles of essays that you may be asked to write.

Read through more essay writing prompts to hone your skills all the more and prepare yourself for any question that may be asked of you.

There are essay writing scholarships that allow you to write about novels that you may have read or will enjoy reading.

Or you may find that the health topic addressed in one type of essay writing scholarship is more engaging for you than writing about whom your greatest influence is and why.

Variety is important. Scholarship committees don't always remember this, and they ask for you to write on issues that are not as culturally relevant as you might like.

So find those writing avenues that really do pique your interest. You'll find that those are much more fun to write.

Do you like poetry?

If so, there are numerous opportunities out there that you should apprise yourself of and work toward pursuing.

For example, the Live Poets Society of New Jersey offers an annual national high school poetry scholarship each year. There are stipulations, of course, pertaining to length and the like, but if you love writing poetry, this just may be up your alley.

Are short stories what you most love writing?

No problem. There are short story scholarships and other creative writing scholarships out there that will help you to fulfill your purpose.

Sometimes there may be limits on what you may write about, but more often than not, these scholarships allow for creativity and freedom of expression so they can really note how well you write and how your passion is expressed through your writing.

It's really nonfiction that you want to try your hand at, isn't it?

It just strikes you as more interesting, as it is based in reality rather than fiction. Check out some nonfiction writing scholarship opportunities.

Find your passion and use it. If it's none of the types of writing mentioned above, find what it is that interests you and go with it.

Essay Writing Scholarships If you love songwriting, visit the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and see what scholarship opportunities they have to offer for high school and beyond. Or watch American Idol each year and see what you can offer for the next annual winner of that competition!

There are a plethora of writing scholarships to help you release your inhibitions, break through your writer's block, and just write until you feel so confident in your writing that you just know the writing scholarship committee will thoroughly enjoy it as well.

So read through more scholarship essay writing tips and opportunities that are out there!

Work on the ones that allow you the most creative expression, and put your pen to paper until you've made it perfect. Then submit your work, and, as always, practice patience!
