Click for Free Writer's Block Help E-Zine and Free E-Book Two good writing topics to help you succeed in summoning up all this writing energy are fun and easy to do. They both take ordinary words and phrases that you probably take for granted, and ask you to use them in not-so-ordinary ways. For example, one creative writing topic that will start you in the right direction is based around the idea of mathematical words. I can honestly tell you that, as an English major and a writer, I never truly enjoyed math. I could deal with algebra and statistics, but when it came to geometry, calculus, and trigonometry, I found myself longing for a good piece of literature in place of any of that mathematical jargon I knew I was bound to have to sit through during class.
However, mathematical words do not have to be worrisome to us writers any longer. We can use them in ways that have nothing whatsoever to do with math, and we can use them well! I propose, as one of the good writing topics you will find throughout this page and this website, that you take all the mathematical words you can think of, jot them down on a sheet of paper, and write a story, a poem, or some other genre of writing using all of these words. Here's the catch, though: you must use these words in such a way that they have nothing at all to do with math. You cannot have a student in your story that is sitting in a math class and figuring out problems. You cannot have a contractor building a house and using all the math he can think of to work up his blueprints. Your story must take these words and make it so people who are reading it are not even considering the fact that these words come from math textbooks. I'll even help you out with some mathematical words to get you started (make sure to use as many as possible in your story to make it all that much more of a challenge for you). You can use any of these words as any part of speech you'd like (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.): Add Subtract Multiply Divide Equation Sum Matrix Formula Perimeter Axis Average Median Mean
Those are just a few to help you get started. See how many more you can think of and write about in non-mathematical, creative ways. Along those same lines, another creative writing topic is to use all the words you can think of that would go into a recipe, and write, in the genre of your choosing, using all of those words in a way that does not relate to baking, cooking, or the like. Here are some words to start you off in this endeavor: Mix Stir Bake Heat Boil Dash Teaspoon Mince Knead Simmer Combine Blend Grate Grease
There are so many more to name, but I'll leave some of the creativity for this good writing topic to you. There are many writing options like these for you to try out as you progress in your writing endeavors. Once you have combined all of your ingredients for writing into one phenomenal story, be sure to share it with us. We're always happy to see the progress you're making through these creative writing games!
