How to write a definition that grabs attention and does not dryly repeat facts can be a tough task to complete. That is why definition essay writing is so important to know how to do. You need to be sure of your facts, understanding of your definitions, and clear with your explanation. If you fail to understand just what you are trying to describe, who's to say that your readers will fully comprehend?

All essays, in fact, have a form of definition included within them. You see, anything that you write about has the potential to not only persuade, but to define. A definition, after all, is not just what a word means. It can help define the overarching themes and concepts present within a piece of writing. For example, the definition of "apt" is "appropriate or suitable under certain circumstances," whereas the definition of a kitchen can take on many different forms. It can be defined as:

1. The place where one eats.
2. The room where one cooks or bakes.
3. A chef's haven.
4. The tastiest room in the house (metaphorically, of course).
5. The room with the fridge, toaster, and dishwasher.

You see how various definitions can come up for "kitchen," because it means different things to different people, unlike the word "apt" which has a set definition.

Definitions can be abstract or concrete. Learning how to write a definition essay for either of these two styles of definitions can be easily done, if you are keenly aware of how to perfectly define your word, phrase, or idea. Think about the meaning of what you are trying to define. What does it mean to different people? How can you incorporate the most meanings possible into your definition essay writing in order to allow the vast majority of your readers to feel a sense of connectivity with what you are writing?

Definition essays are also extremely capable of being persuasive. You may be wondering how to write a definition essay that is clear-cut, compelling, and persuasive. It really is quite easy. The persuasion will become a part of your definition essay no matter if you try as hard as possible to incorporate it, or as little as possible. By defining a word, phrase, or idea for your readers, you are trying to prove your point, and, by extension, persuade your audience to believe that your definition of what a word may mean to you can be believed by others as well. It sounds like a daunting task to make others believe how you define "courage," "creativity," "imagination," or even a kitchen, as in the earlier example. It is how you define your thesis and your supporting details that makes or breaks the persuasive power of your essay.

Now that you feel more adept at just how to write a definition essay, try your hand at one of these extended definition essay topics. Make sure you define the word, phrase, or idea, as well as give anecdotes, examples, and any other pertinent details to make your definition as clear, inspiring, and purposeful as possible.

What is integrity?
What does frustration mean?
How do you define conservative?
What is a home?
When do you feel successful?

Think about these topics in terms of questions, or just in terms of the main words that define each question (integrity, frustration, conservative, home, successful). Remember that of all of the topics above, any or all of them may take on different contexts. For example, the word "conservative" can be thought of in terms of politics, morals, etc.

Be sure to concede to opposing viewpoints that you may not truly believe. By doing so, you will help to make your writing, and your definition, more comprehensible for your readers. For instance, just because you think snow is the most awful form of weather because it creates nasty driving situations does not mean that someone else does not utterly enjoy the first snowfall and all those thereafter.

A great starting point for learning how to write a definition essay is to define what a definition truly means to you. Does it merely incorporate words, or do deeper understandings take root when you fully appreciate a definition? Come to your own conclusions, and your definition essay writing will come to be much easier.
