MasterWriter is a
Gem of a Program.

I was recently introduced to a fabulous new product that makes writing more productive, efficient, creative, and compelling. From word families to phrases, parts of speech to pop culture references, and even a handy dictionary and thesaurus, you can count on MasterWriter to meet your writing needs. I use it myself for any writing dilemmas I may stumble upon in my quest for the perfect word, phrase, etc.

Barry DeVorzon, an American singer, songwriter, producer, and composer, is the brains behind the operation. He discovered and signed the highly successful pop/rock group The Association in the 1960s. Among other songs, he wrote "Nadia's theme," as well as "Bless the Beasts and Children," sung by the Carpenters (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award). He has also won a Grammy and six Emmys.

MasterWriter began as a songwriting program, and has developed into much more, giving guidance and inspiration to all sorts of creative writers, whether they are writing songs, novels, short stories, poems, or any other genres.

DeVorzon says that "all the author has to think about is what he is writing...what is coming from his heart and soul...this keeps him in the creative mode, and not distracted."

While reviewing MasterWriter, I found that not only do all of the sub-areas of the program search simultaneously (minus the parts of speech and pop culture which stand alone), but they all bring up relevant, interesting words and phrases to include in my writing.

DeVorzon also states that the destiny of the MasterWriter software is education. He adds that there are "too many visual enticements out there" for children, and the "most we can hope for is to get them to read more." This program is not only for children, however. Part of his resolve, though, is that MasterWriter "might eventually rescue our young people who are losing the ability to express themselves eloquently."

The program has been demonstrated for Oprah's production firm, and it won Best of Show at Macworld 2003.

MasterWriter software includes:

WORD FAMILIES: Understand words in various contexts so that you may choose the most logical meaning to make your writing clear and stimulating. Take the word "hot," for example. You may select from various usages of the word, including "anger," "sexy," "spicy," "stolen property," or even "temperature." You will then be given a listing of words that match the word "hot" in your chosen context.

PHRASES: Find phrases, sayings, and other cliches and axioms that will delight you and provoke more depth in your writing.

PARTS OF SPEECH: Not only can you filter for nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs, but there is an alliteration dictionary that will filter for positive, negative, moderate, or intense meanings.

DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS: These two programs are both from Merriam-Webster. They are built right in to the program so you do not have to leave your writing groove to find a dictionary or thesaurus on your bookshelf.

RHYMING DICTIONARY: You can search rhymes by not only words and phrases, but by pop culture and even sound-alikes, which have the sound of the word you're looking for, but may not be perfect rhymes. You can choose to search by syllable count as well.

WORD PROCESSOR: There is a built-in word processing capability to allow you to work on your writing without ever having to leave the comfort of the program. You can search for new words and meanings without having to switch between screens on your computer.

POP CULTURE: Not only do you have the whole Bible to work with if you so choose, but you can search pop culture references by anything from folklore and myths to famous leaders, on to movies, TV shows, soft drinks, musicals, and a list that could seemingly go on forever. All of the pop culture references link to Wikipedia, and the website will even open up in the MasterWriter software itself, so opening a browser window is not even essential.

MasterWriter is regularly updated with more words, phrases, and other essential information that you, as a writer, must have in order to do your very best. When you open the program, if you are already online, MasterWriter updates any areas that have new information as long as you give the go-ahead to do so.
