In the following sample definition essay, you will come to understand my visions of the world as an adolescent on into adulthood. I give actual definitions of the key word in my essay -- race -- as well as personal anecdotes that serve as another form of a definition to help clarify the level of import I am assigning to that key word. Read through this sample definition essay to get an idea of how to write one of your very own: Race. The word really packs a punch, doesn't it? Its different meanings lend themselves to one another quite easily. "A group of persons related by common descent or heredity; any group class, or kind of persons." Race is undeniable, unavoidable, inspirational. Race does not have to define whom you are, but so many people use it as a barrier to the world they live in. This is not just in reference to someone of a particular race separating themselves because they think they could not possibly get along with someone of another race. It could be in relation to people who cut others out of their lives, rather than cutting themselves out, because they feel they have nothing in common with, or no inherent connection with, people of other races. It is definitely heartwarming to see people of different races getting along. I know that the Civil Rights movement ended decades ago, but the implications of it are seemingly never ending. With all of the strife, discontent, aggravation, and conflict in the the world nowadays, isn't it comforting not only to see people of different races getting along, but people of the same race?
Another definition of race is: any contest or competition, especially to achieve superiority. This definition is all too familiar within the other concept of race as well. There are some people of various races that feel they are better than, or more deserving than, people of other races. They do not see themselves as being at all empathetic, as there is no way that someone of a different race could possibly understand their troubles. They inspire annoyance, and in a worst case scenario, hate. There is too much at stake nowadays in the world to have people turning on one another because of issues as unchangeable as race. Pride is one thing for these people to have, but immaturity is another. People of all races should see themselves as worthwhile, courageous, equal human beings who have a wealth of living to share. I grew up in a neighborhood where the majority of the people were, and still are, African American. I went to school from kindergarten through twelfth grade with people of all different races, cultures, and ethnicities. My mom used to say that I had the "League of Nations" as my friends. The area was diverse -- my friend Maria was half Mexican and half African American. Mong Tuyen was Vietnamese. Sheela was Nepali Indian. Katie was white. Dana and Gina, my two best friends in high school, were black. I thought nothing of it. Having such a diverse and large group of friends was thrilling for me. I loved talking with them, seeing them in class, going out to lunch, coming over to their houses. Everyone treated everybody equally and with respect. I also went to Hebrew School through the twelfth grade. My grade had about twenty-five people in it on average, and we all were always in the same class. Everyone here was white. White and Jewish. Amazingly, it never struck me that this was the way the world mostly was. Well, maybe not Jewish, but white. I never gave it a second thought. That is until I went to the University of Michigan. There were obviously people of every race, nationality, ethnicity, and culture that you could possibly imagine. But what a culture shock it was to me to realize that the majority of students on campus were white. I feel lucky to have grown up in this situation. I am more aware of the diversity -- the similarities and differences that exist between all people. It is refreshing and stimulating to be able to see the world with a clear vision. People may say that I am wearing rose-colored glasses and seeing all the good that could possibly come out of the diversity that is becoming so widespread. And to this I say, "so what?" Even if I am wearing rose-colored glasses, I feel that my vision is clear, my motives are pure, and if only more people could see through these glasses that I am supposedly looking through, the world would be a much more inviting and educational place. Learning about one another is one of the first steps on the road to realizing that despite the differences between people, the prevailing factor will always remain how we kindly choose to not judge one another, but rather to invest in getting to know each other.
