Stand By Me Movie Review

Stand By Me deserves two thumbs up for its compelling narrative storyline and its superb casting.

River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton make conflict come alive in their searing portrayals of children done wrong. Phoenix’s character, Chris Chambers, embodies a strength that comes, almost miraculously, from a lack of love on the part of his parents. He desires acceptance, yet only finds this in his friends – especially Gordie LaChance, played by Wheaton.

Gordie and Chris are the best of friends. Their differences may seem striking to the naked eye, but they are more alike than they seem. They both crave their fathers’ approval, yet know they will never truly receive it. Gordie lives in his brother’s shadow. Denny, aptly played by John Cusack, is the son that Gordie’s father always wanted. He is the star of the football team, and a great brother to Gordie. However, his winning nature ends when he is killed in a car crash. This element creates agonizing tension in the LaChance household, and Gordie gets away at every moment possible to be with his friends. The help and guidance that permeates the friendship of these boys is inescapably powerful and proves that even at a young age, certain people know just what to say to better a situation.

The storytelling and coming-of-age problems that four pre-adolescent boys deal with makes for a rich and unassuming tale of innocence. The boys learn what it takes to fight back against the older, more seasoned gang of boys who desire the reward far more than the lessons learned while getting to it.

The trip taken to find a dead body becomes so much more when you take the time to get to know the characters. Will Teddy be able to dodge the train? Who would win in a fight between Mighty Mouse and Superman? Who deserves “two for flinching”? All of these answers are at your fingertips when you watch Stand By Me. Alongside a great plotline, you also are able to experience the musical stylings of the 1950s, which is a treat in itself.

The movie also stars Kiefer Sutherland as the leader of the older boys’ gang. His portrayal of an uncaring, insensitive Ace Merrill serves to push the boys further down the train tracks to find the boy who was killed.

Watch Stand By Me to travel alongside Gordie, Chris, Ace, Denny, and all the rest in this gloriously emotional and thought-provoking tale of heartache and triumph.
